I put some masking tape around the throttle where it butts up against the light switch housing then put a piece on the switch housing too. Put corresponding marks at zero throttle, then twist throttle to full open and mark that position on the throttle, then divide into 8 segments from zero to WOT [wide open throttle], then you can do your plug checks at set throttle positions. Plug chops best done on a decent road with frequent laybyes to use. Hold throttle at set point, switch off ignition, immediately pull in clutch and coast to a halt, preferably in the laybye where it should be safer to remove the spark plug, that gives a snapshot of the plug at the time of switching off the ignition. Ideally you'll have held it at the same throttle position for at least a couple of minutes.

Thought you'd be watching the cup final, mate? Oh, sorry, don't suppose you wanted to be reminded of thatcorrado wrote:Doing plug chops would have been a better day than digging out a tree stump.
