Cashy is this you? Loosing compression ay good don't do out until you strip it down if the circlip come off you will knacker the cylinder.

On the first 166 I built I had the piston in the wrong way round!
I put the ring pegs opposite the exhaust port but they actually go either side of the exhaust. Check which way the arrow goes on the top of the piston

my guess is you"ve put the rings on the piston upside down. they are trapezoid rings ,i.e., wedge shaped, and only fit on one way (usually with the laser mark uppermost) it will run for a bit till the rings jam in the piston.
The winner is.........Goldeneye!
Dropped engine and took top end off.......circlips in place and no damage to rings or piston/barrel. One stud was knackered though and rings felt very tight in piston.
Took the rings out and noticed that the laser printing was down most. Cleaned up the rings and chaged the stud, put it back together and got compression back. Off to the pub now to celebrate and I'll drop it back into the frame tomorrow.
Fingers crossed that it'll go now.
Thanks for the many responses and I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.
