hopefully my scooter will be up and rolling roaded within the next week or so, its got me thinking about how to keep it safe and try to avoid killing it, due to my location its few local roads but then its fast A roads to anywhere.

I know of, but not much about the CHT and EGT guages

which one will offer the best indication of impending doom? or is there an overlap that means fitment of both is best?

Im not after ideal temps etc as they obviously differ for every scooter and location etc, but would appreciate some advise on which type of guage to use

thanks
heavy is good, heavy is reliable, and if it does fail, hit them with it!!!

Yep, that's another warning sign of detonation, have a read here, great info re. CHT and EGT...

If i was looking at getting another gauge i would seriously consider a detonation counter/knock sensor. More expensive but......they tell you much quicker if your bike is detonating/pinking as your not waiting for the heat to go up or down like an EGT or CHT however i have an EGT and do not have more money to spend at the moment.
As Soulsurfer says high EGT's and low EGT's can be just as bad. You have to learn how to read an EGT properly and what effects it. If you retard your timing your exhaust gas temperature will go up as the charge is burning later but as we all know retarding the timing is safer! However if you run the scoot leaner EGT's can go up as well but it certainly is not safer!
Extremely low EGT's are just as bad because for example if you advance your timing the EGT's will go down but only because the head and piston is retaining more heat.
So all in all you have to know what temp your bike runs safely at and watch for extreme changes in high or low temperature.
A combination of both EGT and CHT is good though because if you have a very low EGT reading and a high CHT reading you definitely know your fooked
