Powder coat cures at 160 C to 190 C.
Exhaust header temperature will burn it off in minutes.

Eibar wrote:even barbecue paint & fire grate paint both done by plastikote do burn off on the header section of the pipe virtually strainght away, I've found they are not as resilient as powdercoat.

My expansion chamber costs me a tenner to get coated and i'll get all year riding out of it for 2 years at stretch, so works out cheaper than plastikote and the effort of sanding and cleaning the pipe.

Never had a problem with BBQ burning off but then I do use the expensive wilkinsons paint....

My downpipe isn't coated with anything. It's not rotted away yet..

Obviously mine is special. But are people buying downpipes made from cheese, or is there another reason for coating them with something?

I Don't know if you can get this stuff over there but I've used POR-15 "Black Velvet" High Temp Paint. Comes in a tin and I thin it a little and shoot it with my HVLP gun. It's expensive but the tin lasts a long time. I've painted my taffy exhaust 3 times with a pint and I've got about half left. It won't stay looking great on the header but I wouldn't say it's burnt off. Anything that POR-15 makes is top notch. Find it if you can.

Tim it's all here

~ Powder Coating is a great way to improve a products appearance while giving it a rugged finish and can resist consistant temperatures up to 325°F.

~ Ceramic Coating is another form of powder, but can withstand temperatures in excess of 1400ºF. Ceramic is ideal for exhaust manifolds, turbochargers, downpipes, etc.

~ Anodizing is only applicable to aluminum, but is one of the strongest anti-corrosion coatings available and depending on the specific type of anodizing can actually increase the fixtures strength.

~ Black Oxide is generally used for Steel and Stainless and is used primarily to prevent corrosion while changing the color of the material.
