Riding a scooter in NYC is a war. The main enemy is the yellow army of taxi's, who shift lanes whenever they like, despite being alongside the driver, police too. The pedestrians are cocky and prefer to cross when they please, not according to the lights, and they do not care about looking, they are talking on the smartphone. The street surface is a minefield, slimed with food and trash truck grease. Add buses, congestion and constant horn use and you get a fair idea of the battleground. I crashed twice in 6 years, minor stuff thankfully.

The best practice in dense traffic is to head directly at the problem, squirt through and stay ahead. If you are patient, or timid, you will be part of the problem. Lane splitting to the front of the line is paramount. Low end grunt is needed for rapid 1-2 gear launches to the next light.

I found 5am at sunrise peaceful, when I once hit 83 green lights in a row. It is the fastest way around that city, no comparison. But you can expect your ride to be beaten up because of it. I do not miss it.

Next time I am there, I am headed to Mr G's shop for a handshake and clothing.
