very loud noise from engine

when I start my scooter Thers a very loud noise from the engine like a horrible popping noise; if I cover the hole on the back of the exhaust the noise goes away; is this normal,

No!!! . . . it's a sign that the bell end johnson rod is out of true and needs urgent surgery by a registered mohel.

definitely not normal IMO. Most Lambretta engines are completely silent.....................
