I need to split my P2 engine to change my cruciform and also need to give my clutch a bit of an overhaul but I've been reading about Malossi upgear kits (the first hyperlink) for the primary drive / input shaft.

On paper (the third hyperlink) you seem to get a relatively good performance boost by having it fitted. My engine is standard just now just with a expansion pipe and revs out to about 6500 (according to my rev counter) so according to the table I should (!!) see speeds of around 70+ mph with the upgear kit fitted.

Not just that but for motorway cruising you shouldn't need to have the throttle wide open to sit at 60/65. Anybody got one fitted or anybody heard good or bad things about them??

You should really try and read-up on how 2stroke engines work before 'tuning' one.

Ref your standard P2: you could 'probably' be better off 'shortening' the gearing with a 36 tooth 4th. gear cog.

Your 'expansion pipe' will probably want to rev to 8500-9000 rpm and provide power in that range.

It should give you perhaps an optomistic 14bhp with the correct compression (get the head skimmed) and jetting at the peak in that rev range and hopefully give you a real 70mph flat-out on the flat with a following wind: that is the reality...unfortunately. Accept it or tune further at your expense.....

Yeah cheers for the friendly advice fella :D having a reasonably good understanding of how a 2 stroke engine works, my original post was aimed at asking whether a standard engine would be able to cope with such high gearing with the malossi gear kit (as there's no reason for me to drop the gearing on my 4th at the moment as this would actually reduce my top speed I believe - I do a lot of motorway miles).

So even with the head skimmed and correct jetting I'm thinking the malossi kit gearing would be too tall and would require a cylinder kit (malossi or similar).

You agree?

I used to run a P200 with the Polini 23/64 straight cut upgear kit, it was in there as a leftover from the previous owner who' also had a Pinasco kit on it which had gone wrong, and he sold it to me with a standard top end. It was OK but would struggle at times and I wouldn't recommend it.

I fitted a 60mm crank and with the extra torque the longer stroke gave me it pulled well and I was very happy with it. This was with a standard carb and genuine Piaggio pipe.

I thought it might be a bit much for a standard engine. Fitting a 60mil crank is something I hadn't thought of. Cheers for the info pal.
