hi,running a new type jl4 and am struggling with the noise level, pipe is new so end can is fully packed but wondering if there is any way to reduce noise level? was advised to try a taffspeed end can on my pipe as it holds more wadding but dont know if that would alter the pipe characteristics or damage the engine, anyone with any experience of trying this? or any other solutions without changing the pipe?///////////
cheers

How long has it been on ? If the bike runs rich it will clag the wadding up making it less efficient in the end can and louderhandofdave wrote:hi,running a new type jl4 and am struggling with the noise level, pipe is new so end can is fully packed but wondering if there is any way to reduce noise level? was advised to try a taffspeed end can on my pipe as it holds more wadding but dont know if that would alter the pipe characteristics or damage the engine, anyone with any experience of trying this? or any other solutions without changing the pipe?///////////

Can you fit your fist through your exhaust port?
If you can, that'll be why it's noisy.
I ran a 185 with a JL4, and it was quieter than an indion 200 with a clubman on it. Although louder than my reverse cone clubman on my 185.

You'd have to be pretty dumb not to with any exhaust. Wind noise over 40mph causes permanent damage.
Edit: handily this is in the Lambretta section.. rather than the PX section.

Cambridge Lambretta do an 'Ultimate' end can, which I can confirm is much quieter and sounds nicer than the usual JL type, as I've got one on my Super Monza exhaust, however, the end can on it's own is £200.handofdave wrote:hi,running a new type jl4 and am struggling with the noise level, pipe is new so end can is fully packed but wondering if there is any way to reduce noise level? was advised to try a taffspeed end can on my pipe as it holds more wadding but dont know if that would alter the pipe characteristics or damage the engine, anyone with any experience of trying this? or any other solutions without changing the pipe?///////////

I've seen posts on this forum before where different types of end can - from other 2 strokes - have been used with success, however, not sure what make they were, and seem to recall that at the time I couldn't find anywhere on the net that sold them.
It would be great to get a recommendation of an end can that can be used from another 2 stroke that is quieter than the JL type (like the Ulimate is), fits (maybe with a bit of fettling) but isn't too expensive and can be easily sourced, say from Ebay or similar. I very much doubt if we did find something it would have the build quality of the 'Ultimate' etc., but it would just be nice to have a cheaper alternative.
Maybe this is all just wishful thinking!

You can use certain types of Aprillia RS125 end can, but be advised that the endcan inner tube diameter is at least the same diameter as the original JL4 end can. Coupel of years ago I fitted a PM carbon end can to a JL4 to reduce the engine noise and holed my piston within a couple hundred kilometers because the end can diameter was 22 instead of 26 or 24mm. If the diameter is smaller it can make your engine run hotter...
Life shouldn't be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty, well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, loudly proclaiming: "WOW, WHAT A RIDE"
