Widestyle ~ Series 1 & 2 shock length = 315mm (33mm wide mount)
Slimstyle ~ Series 3 ~ Li, TV, SX, GP shock lenth = 300mm (33mm wide mount)
It was many years ago that Taffspeed had Rod Avon of AVO (UK) make our first Lambretta shock units with steel bodies.
Early units were adjustable for length 300-315mm fitted with 275-300lbs/inch or 300-350lbs/inch springs due to the incline of the shock unit & the issue of when sat on the scooter & the effect of the weight loading behind the engine pivot fulcrum!
These dampers had a 20 position damping adjustment to work against the spring used.
He sold the company to Chassis Dynamics in Northampton who will still supply spares etc & service these early units. (Ref No. 1038)
A few years later Rod Avon started again making Billet Alloy shock units as "Protech Shocks" in Melksham. £150.00 plus P&P
The same format was tried but with a few unit having snapped rods as the mounting bushes have less flex in them it was decided to narrow the mounting bushes to 30mm so that the shock unit could rotate on the engine & frame mountings.
This stopping the original problem caused by them being clamped up solid with NO movement!
During this time Protech changed the damper rods to a larger diameter 10mm to 13mm which strengthened the unit.
We fitted the same spring set up to these Billet Shocks, the only thing different was that they had 12 positions for damping adjustment.
They also did units for the front & rear of the Italjet Dragster & unit for the rear of the Vespa P Range!
AF Rayspeed had GAZ Shocks make units for them!
These above makes of shockabsorbers were developed for the Lambretta scooter by a suspension company!
Not adapted from a used motorcycle that has the damping set for a much heavier spring working at a shorter fulcrum distance with a rising rate bellcrank!
These Yamaha shock units do not suit the Lambretta suspension geomerty as the valve set up is suited to the original Yamaha bike with a very heavy spring.
Getting the Lambretta to handle better & cope with more power & speed on the race track brought on these suspension improvements for you the road user.
Be aware of what you fit to your scooter when it is suspension, wheels & brake related as not all items go through a riggerous testing period!
