Gearing..

I don't understand the technical benefits of gearing but I 've recently had my engine virtually rebuilt and the gearing was changed, now when I get to 4th very little happens compared to how it was before. My mate says the gearing may be a little too high on the front sprocket and he will drop it back down one tooth. Not doubting his expertise just understanding that dropping one tooth makes that much differance. It's a 200.

No it was discussed but I was told it would be better for my set up..... :?
