Get a 9v PP3 battery box from maplins, they're £1.99 and have a little on/off switch built in. Connect it up to the power feed to the koso and you're away. Koso do sell one but it's almost exactly the same. I fitted some velcro to the battery box and stick it next to the gauge. I also put a blob of silicon sealant where the wires go into the box to keep the water out.

MB sell the koso one if you don't want the hassle

The varitronic reg has a DC output Steve, but not sure what sort of power it kicks out.I have mine to charge a battery to run my speedo and it does the job ok and have often wondered if the terminal would have the output just to run a gauge without having a battery.

Without a battery or at least a capacitor, you will get low voltage at low revs which will probably give eratic readings on your gauges.
