Can someone give me an idiots guide to setting the timing ? As the scoot is running way to hot

Best advice for this is to buy stickys workshop manual, great book and will be a source of cost free maintenace for years to come..

As said previously get sticky`s book, but in the meantime:-
ascertain tdc (top dead centre) accurately, mark on the maghousing where the arrow on the flywheel ends up (it may already be marked) then with the flywheel removed put a timing disc on with the 0 degree mark against tdc, then put another mark on the maghousing against whatever degree of timing you want, these days 18 degrees btdc, but some people reckon 17 degrees, then remove timing disc, put the flywheel on and you need to line up the arrow on the flywheel with the 18 degree mark, and at the same time line up the 2 small marks on the pick up with the 2 small marks in the window of the flywheel, you may well have to remove the flywheel to adjust the stator position so they all align, when all aligned tighten up stator, re-fit flywheel, a ne then its advisable to check with a strobe light.

i never pay any attention to the marks on the pickup, they are notoriously inaccurate; just use a strobe
