mag flange gasket, is it needed

hi all,opinions sought,is a mag flange gasket necessary,or can i use hylomar blue or clear silicon to seal the face,reason is i'm going to run a af lightened flywheel and it is just missing the pick up with no gasket and might catch if i fit a gasket,dont want to go to the hassle of machining the magflange unless i really have to,cheers all.

AS no one else has had the decency to answer your question, I'll oblige. Yes, you could use silicone sealant. Be a bugger to get off later, but would do the job OK. But check that your crank web still has clearance from the mag flange (Oooohhhh, flange, I love that word) :D

what you really should do is have the face of the flange where the stator sits machined back by 1mm when using the af light flywheel set up

cheers,will use some hylomar blue,non setting on the spigot,and some clear silicon on the gasket face,then should have a chance of getting it apart,hopefully not for a few years.

I think the mating surface of your case and mag-flange will have a bearing on if you need a gasket or not.

I ran into a lot of problems getting a Spanish 200cc engine case to seal up at the mag flange, due to the matching face machined with concentric groves. The face on the flange was smooth. Never seen that on an Italian case. I had problems when pressure testing this engine, it was leaking around all three stator bolts, when I used Hylomar blue on both sides of a gasket. I minimized the leak down to one stator screw, and very minor at that (it could hold 2-3 lbs pressure for about 2 minutes) using a different, semi-hardening gasket maker on a new gasket. I don't look forward to taking this apart in the future. I went through three gaskets and a lot of goo to get it to this point.

On this engine, I could not seal it up without a gasket. Pressure testing with the piston at BDC was worse, it was not as bad with the piston at TDC. Although any leak is bad, I took the advice of a minor leak in the primary case pressure being tolerable, as opposed to a leak at the head, or manifolds, of which there were none.

I did read somewhere that doing that might cause issues with the alignment of the pickup contacts with the magnet triggers.

If you are getting machining done it might be better to take a mm out of the inside of the flywheel to improve the clearance.
