Im giving my taffy pipe some tlc and i was going to give it the caustic soda treatment.

can i just leave the end can on and bung it up,then pour the mix in from the other end?
ive just heard that it can damage the endcan....is this right?
endcan is coming off anyway so i can repack it and redo the rivets but i thought it would be easier to decoke it with the endcan on.

any ideas??

End can off, caustic and alloy aren't friends.

If your planning on repainting it anyhow then burning it through with some gas and air works better, get a good cherry going at the tail end and it will work its way up through the pipe, any remaining carbon just falls out afterwards.
