Hello all,
Was wondering what are the possible causes of a holed piston,
the engine is an RB230 which has done around 3600 miles ,was built by JB Tuning and has been running great,
I filled up on my way to sandford at my local sainsburys and then around 5 miles down the road bang.
have taken the barrel off and cant see any possible leaks,so am thinking its the fuel?
Any ideas?

Not sure what the timing was set at as john did all that at JB so would have thought it was set up ok and had never had ay problems before.

Hi there, Super unleaded contains a higher percentage of ethanol, i'd stick to stock 95ron unleaded and add octane booster if you need to. I also use a quality oil that is compatable with alcohol fuels

Holing a piston on the road is bad enough, all the worse on the way to somewhere your`e looking forward to going, but not knowing what caused it is worrying, OK you can put a new piston in and hopefully re-use the cylinder, what do you have to do to stop it happening again ? I know its happened to me, and lots of others I guess.
Keep on keepin on

What kind of roads/speeds/throttle position had you been doing for the previous miles, and what road/speed/throttle position when she popped?

set the timing at 17 dbtdc, and fit a low compression head. You'll lose 1/2 horsepower but be able to run safely on std unleaded. According to tanker drivers supermarkets get the exact same fuel as anyone else.

Wrong, Super Unleaded contains less, and in lots of cases, Zero Ethanol. Check this out :-
