Hmm Spitfire versus Me109, pros and cons for both of them I believe. One of the Spits week points in a dog situation was that all variations of the Merlin engine were fitted with carburetas which meant that when they went into a dive the engine would suffer fuel starvation and stall unless the pilot rolled in a particular direction (left or right, can't remember). The Me pilots knew this so always knew which way the Spit was going to go, the Merc engine in the Me always had fuel injection and didn't suffer from fuel starvation.

On the other hand, the Me pilots were in awe of the Spits wings which were imensly strong. A Spit being persued in a dive always knew that the Me would pull out first as their pilots thought the Me's wings would fail under the G's requyired to pull out of the dive. Test carried out after the war by the allys' found that the German pilots fears were completely unfounded  Other problems with the Me 109 was very iffy undercarriage and a claustrophobic cockpit.

Best fighter imho was the P51 Mustang, Fantastic airframe and the Merlin engine from the Spit.

Craig, nice scoot, nice touches with the gauges 8-)

Might be worth sending ducksta a PM craig H. He would probably be interested in swapping that mauve jumper for
a nice red one that would actually fit the poor girls arms.

It was an upside down Daimler Benz engine in the 109. The 109 could also turn inside the Spitfire as well and technically was a better fighter to be honest. I remember a programme on this last year in which it stated that one of the reasons we won the BOB was basically because we fought it on our own terms. The Spitfire was out gunned and out manoeuvred, but the real reason we won was simply because you could get shot up, land, jump in a new one and be off again because we rattled them out. Whereas the Germans produced far fewer aircraft and simply didn't have that luxury. That and better training and organisation.

better pilots.better motivation and better cause.3 reasons why an upside down, injected, solid gold, all singing all dancing mercedes whatever makes no difference to the outcome. tell you what would be cool, fitting a 109 engine IN your T5!!! now thats going to be impressive.

In a list of the top 300 fighter aces of ww2 the Germans have 198 of them and occupy the first 110 positions, the first UK pilot comes in at position 212 and there are 9 more in positions between that and 296 ( there are Irish,Canadians and New Zealanders with the RAF in the top 300 but I didnt count them). Imagine what the Luftwaffe could have done if the training and organisation were as good as that of the RAF.

When I say better training it is of course going to be open to debate. It would be more accurate to say the RAF had better mechanisms in place on the ground to train more pilots quickly. In the end it all comes down to logistics. We could sustain a much greater rate of attrition than the Luftwaffe.

Also a huge factor in the outcome was lack of range for the Germans. Once they got to the channel they literally had a few minutes at combat rate before they had to turn for home.
