But I have one and have been running it for ages. On the road and around town I like it.
I was running it at Elvington with some mixed results. 81mph in 500metres.
i can get my bike to 81 mph with 4 speeds so yes its pointless....except ive just remembered that i have a degree in pointless additions to my lammy. hmmm i think i'll just shut up and fit my new 70's bubble screen that deflects wasps straight into my mouth and wipes 10mph off my top speed.

Ignore the reliablity issues of a 5 speed for a second....
The 5 speed gbox is a benefit. ratios are closer... therefore you accelerate quicker as you can work your motor within its best power. Its also kinder to the clutch and the 'shock' factor through the box is less as the drops are less. So less chance of breakage.
There is another thing to think of... you maybe be able to do 80 in 4th or whatever.. but if you had a 5th gear that had say 1000 rpm on top your motor maybe able to pull it.. so with the same power you will go faster.
OR.. on the other side of the coin...After the shootout meet I did recently I would love a 5 speed box.. why? Well I geared to do over 100mph in 4th.. as a result my first gear was 53mph at peak and therefore difficult to launch.. but... with a 5 speed I could have geared is different and got away quicker and still had the top speed.
The issues you have is the limited space. Once this has been addressed and good quality gears made , it is definately a good idea.
Of course , if you are not interested in performance scootering then disregard the above. Motors with low output, box pipes etc will not really benefit that much.
