12 Volt Stator Plate .... is it dodgy ??

Gents,

A few weeks back I noticed a slight flickering from my headlight. On Tuesday night it got real bad, then the lights would only operate above 1/4 throttle...then no lights & no horn at all. Brake light still works, and ignition still works fine. I have replaced the C.D.I. & Regulator and they have made no difference. I have read a few online pages regarding testing certain wires etc, so I have listed all findings below....hopefully it makes some sort of sense to someone ?

You're getting yourself a bit confused there fella. The lighting and ignition are COMPLETELY seperate circuits, the green wire is the Low Tension ignition Coil (LT coil) and the red is for the ingition pickup. Both those readings are a little low but still within tollerance and absolutely nothing to do with you lights. The yellow wire will be the output from the lighting coils (the other side of all the coils go to earth) and the resistance of the lighting coils is very low, about 1 ohm so you would be better off testing it on volts with the engine running. Another idea would be to make sure that it isn't a lose connection in the loom. Disconnect the brown loom wire from the regulator and connect a car battery or a battery charger to it. Then it the lights are steady you will know you are looking for a fault on the stator.

If the brake light still works then you're looking at a poor connection somewhere. What loom are you using?

I started the bike up, and changed the setting on the meter to volts. I put the positive from the test meter onto the yellow from the stator plate and it was reading around 14 volts....give or take. I then disconnected the brown from the wiring loom and put the positive from a battery charger onto it, and nowt...no lights at all !!

Looks like I have a loose connection, or a break somewhere.

Its an M.B. Electronic loom fitted...its been in a while though and the engine was dropped out a few months back, so perhaps the damage was done then ??

Just to be clear Mark and appologies if it sounds condesending but you did connect the negative from ther batt charger to the frame didn't you

Its an M.B. Electronic loom fitted...

Thought that might be the case, power first goes to the brake light switch, so check that the red and purple are still connected into the one bullet connector.

If all the bullet connections are good it may be like my GP and the light/horn switch has died partially, I had no lights but brake light worked etc. New switch cured it, hope this helps.
