Mike, my technique has never failed me once and trust me I've had to ungunk engines that where as bad or even worse than that (its the local thing you know :lol: ) I use petrol directly. A large bowl of petrol and a brush. The big parts with gunk just simply go away with oven cleaner or wood cleaner as they have pointed out. A friend of mine uses brake cleaner althou I have never used it myself, I dont know it by experience but he says it will degunk anything.

Took these to my neighbours gearbox company and used his paraffin cleaner and then a spin in his hot degreaser...

He's right you know works a treat & cheap too!
Spray on leave for 20mins, no longer on ally as it caustic, agitate with a stiff brush and wash off. Simples. ;)

That's fine but I didn't want to leave all the s**t on me driveway once I'd cleaned it off the casing :lol:
