The one that Marks used is a Rave2 Powervalve/blade its vacuum controlled. You turn the red part in or out to set when you want the powervalve to open. The tighter you screw it in the more revs you need to open the valve. Its a way round the electrics required to open a RAVE typeblade.

And yeah Seans obviously right about the tip of the blade, it needs to be on the cylinder wall to lower the port timings. I'll go grab a cylinder and a RAVE unit and take a few pics when I can ;)
Stay tuned..............

Ive just been down to the shed and cant find the spare blade that I have, I need to have a propper look at the weekend. I think I have the entire powervalve system from an Aprilia including the loom in the shed somewhere

Anyway I found some pics from my smallframe build that show my barrel with the RAVE type blade fitted:

Heres another one from a different angle with the cable fitted, you can see that it doesnt take up as much space as the RAVE2 unit

You would fit it in exactly the same manner as that Mark did but with this type you would get exact control of when you wanted the valve to open.

Heres a pic of an RD350 servo and an Ignitech control system:
