your experiences with a bgm stator

just a quick question...has anyone ever had to grind out the slots on a bgm stator to get the timing to 17-19 degrees? I'm using a new af lightened flywheel ( 1.4 kg one ) and with the stator all the way counter clockwise i got to 15 degrees.

I have a BGM stator fitted and used with an original Ducati light flywheel. I have it set at 18 degrees with plenty more adjustment. I think the problem is more than likely the A F flywheel, i seem to remember when i purchased the stator i was adviced not to use the A F flywheel for this very reason. I hope this helps. Pete

you need to check that the keyway on the flywheel center is in the correct position.

how do i do that? the key way on the flywheel and crank are lined up and the flywheel sits on the crank nicely or do you mean the key way on the flywheel is not cut in the correct place?

What you'll have to do is extend the slots on the stator by a few mm. it's not a big deal really. I think the key way on the flywheel is a few degrees out leading to the problem that you are having.

last month had to change the elemec flywheel because even if the slots were extended i can't go under 27° timing.
it was the key way in the wrong place....

the keyway is part of the center boss piece. if that piece isn't installed in the correct position or the holes to secure that center piece aren't drilled in the correct position you get what you describe.

you can elongate the stator plate holes to get closer but make no mistake, it is the flywheel that is off.

I have seen these BGM stators for sale on Fleabay, and it used to (don't know about now) state in the listing that they were not suitable for use with the AF flywheel.

yea i should have done my research and asked around. oh well...i have everything adjusted so that it;s running well.

I've currently got a BGM stator on my bike with a lightened indion flywheel.
No problems with it at all.
It may be the nature of my engine, but it goes a lot nicer with the slightly heavier flywheel than it did with the AF one I ran on it previously.

What engine are you running it on? A relatively cheap fix could be to get one of the lightened indion flywheels from Beedslow, rather than fanny around filing and getting your hands dirty.
