Ok now I have seen my stator I may be able to explain things better.

The pickups I am talking about are actually the magnets fixed to the top of the copper coils and although there are a couple of scorched the main damage is to one in particular and this has obviously been worn down by the flywheel. It has been worn down on the inside and is now wedge shaped and it is the coil that would be in the ten oclock posistion if the stator was on the engine.

I find it strange that just one would be baedily damaged if it was the flywheel or crank out of true.

Think of it this way the flywheel when central will spin freely round the stator but if its off centre due to rivets being loose or the crank being twisted the flywheel is then going to spin out of aline. Like orbiting the stator so at one point the flywheel inner magnets are going to be nearest the stator and at the opposite side its going to be furthest away.
The point nearest is your ten o.clock coil mount so the flywheel has rubbed it pown to a wedge over time. Usually when a crank twists its the black pick up box that gets smashed or worn down .

is it possible that the stator wasnt fitted quite right.........sometimes the inner lip needs a bit of dressing up to recess into flange properly..............
this would maybe explain..............the uneven wear
