rear light and brake light problem

Hi i have a problem with my rear light and brake light and cannot figure out what i have done wrong,
when i have the wires put in the right way round the rear light is really bright and the when i press the brake pedal the brake light comes on but really dim, now when i put the wires on the wrong way round i get no backlight but a really bright brake light can anyone tell me what i have done wrong please because getting confused now :?

swap the black and pink over on rear light unit

hi mark i have swapped them over and like i said i get no rear light then just the brake light :?

Sounds like a bad earth,have you just had a paint job? Also there should be 3 terminals on the rear light unit are the wires in the correct terminals?
