I am rebuilding an early (1979) P"E gearbox and I have forgotten the correct way to rebuild the box, can someone tell me the right side of the gear cogs to offer up to the layshaft please. The pictures in the Haynes manual are not very clear and I don't want to rebuild the box and then find false neutrals..!

I'll mark them for next time...!

when you take a gearset off a shaft, cable tie it together in the order it came off, shims included. makes it easy to put back together months later.

thats always a good idea and one that also applies to lambrettas ...thing is ...just be aware that they could have been in the wrong way initially

Actually, I'm building up a T5 engine, but I suppose the order of loose gears - or more specifically which way up they go - is very similarto a P2E :?

In any event, as I am a complete muppet on Vespa engine rebuilds  would one of our resident Vespa experts please explain which way up the loose gears go onto the layshaft - yes, I forgot to cable tie them all together ;) - as reading this thread has left me even more confused??

Obviously, the order is obvious, but I don't want to go closing the casing up, only to find I've put the loose gears in the wrong way up and can't select any gears!!!

I think I've worked out 4th gear, with the dished side facing rear hub, so assuminng that's correct, what about the others?? :?

Please help!!! :?

Thanks, Tom :D
