hi all,

i've got a vijay super gearbox 50,42,38,35 tree 10,12,16,19

28mm pwk keihin
scootrs exhaust
mugello 186 v2
electronic ig

I would love to go with an li box but the funds are sparse at the mo :(

i've tried to get the most out of what i have and put a 16 front sprocket on.. which i think brings me down to 4.9 final drive

is this ok or should i leave as standard.( advice welcome ) :D :D

sorry if i'm going over old ground i just couldn't find anything that related to these gearboxes

I tried a Vijay Super Mk2 box with my Mugello 186, PHBH28, JL3 and it would hardly pull 4th    .

Changed to a GP200 box and it transformed it. My understanding is that the ScootRS exhaust is even more revvy than the JL3 making matters even worse for you. :(

BTW the JL3 is often touted as a box that makes it's power low down. It might do compared with a really revvy race pipe, but in my experience it provides little low rev grunt with a Mugello  .

Cheers,

Nigel

mine's the earlier mk 1 box

if the gp200 box is the way to go then i guess i only need to change 3 and 4th loose gears to get a 200 box :?

I've heard the JL3 described as "like a JL4 race pipe with the lovely top end scream taken out but without any benefit at the bottom end or midrange"

did it sell :?: £60 is about the going rate unless its some dealer ramping the price up like they do with other "rare parts"

Do you know, I think you've hit the nail on the head! I must stick a clubman on one day for a direct comparison. There really is not a lot of guts below 4500 rpm, but it all comes together after that and flies.

Ahh, the Vijay Super Mk1 is a better box for your needs I would have thought. The Mk2 has got a huge gap between 3rd & 4th (makes my SX150 box feel like a close ratio ;)) and a really high final drive. Yours is equivalent to an SX150, but with a reduced jump.

I believe you can't mix and match loose gears and trees. You have to replace loose gears and cluster together. I was lucky when I got my GP200 box, it was a snip at £40 odd about a year ago from a dealer (unfortunately he's put his price up now).

£58 ish from Scooter Restorations at the moment:

definitely want to change my gearbox after riding a few dual carriageway miles today.
Mugello v.2 with VHSA28 & old Mikeck mk6.
currently got standard Li125 Special gearing. so 6.1 final drive ratio .
at 8000rpm this is about 66mph.
I was thinking of leaving the box as is and playing with sprockets, but what'll pull ?

5.8 ? I've got a 16 tooth sprocket, but not a worn enough chain.
5.4 ? got a 17 tooth sprocket, but would need the 81 link chain
5.2 ? got a 82 link chain, but neither std GP200 sprockets
4.8 ? use the 82 link chain, 46 crownwheel and get a 19 tooth front sprocket ??

I have also got a [early] pacemaker box, but was saving that for the next engine...

or any other combination suggestions welcome
