Jumping out of first gear
Head of the pinch bolt on your selector fork snaging on the casing? Did you use the correct one with a 9mm head?
is it gp or li style gear selector shaft if li may need moving round a notch.

Not too much play in the linkage is there? If you can't get it to go in by slackening the upshift cable and tightening the downshift cable then it might be worth trying another one.
Also, is the clutch dragging at all? Won't help matters if it is.

did you line the shaft up as per stickys book
you dont state what bike youve got but if its an older model it could be the posistion of the gear arm where it connects to the shaft going into the gear box. As a guide with the engine built if you put the bike in forth gear (lambretta) with the gear rod from the cables attatched the arm should almost hit the rear suspension casting on the engine,if the gap is to big it wont go forward enough to select 1st, do you understand. Another little thing to check is the arm with the gear cable swivel fitted with the kink facing SORRY OUT WARDS ?
