Hi people,

For a post 1974 scooter, I read somewhere that you can have a small plate providing the lettering is the right height etc, in a situation where there isnt enough space - eg 7 x 7" but must be orange. Does anyone know if this is correct.

Also, what is the penalty for having a black and silver plate on a post 74 model?

Has anyone ever been stopped for this type of plate on this board or know of anybody who has?

is it also true that it is illegal now for UK companies to do show plates?

The letter of the law is that you must have a barn door sized plate. However, If the rest of the scoot is in order it would be a hard nosed copper that nicked you for something that looks less stupid

On my Jet, I have a 6.5x6.5 yellow plate but luckily it has two "1"s in the number and so it all fits.

You can still get show plates although the law has changed and so I'm not sure how long it will last. I got a perspex plate from http://www.bike-plate.com/ but I will probably get a pressed ally, tellow plate at some point.

The local number plate supplier I use will only issue the legal size now, for motorcycles I think that is 9.5 inches by 7 inches. I needed to get one quickly so went along with it, the photo below shows how ridiculous it looks and you can't get your side panels on and off easily.
Needless to say I will be getting a smaller one from elsewhere. DVLA didn't help by issuing me a 7 digit plate, and I asked really nicely if they could issue me a 6 digit number, "more than me jobs worth" - yeah right

Thats gonna knock 10 MPH off your top speed due to drag! :D

I managed to get a nice 6.5 x6.5 inch one made up in plastic (black and silver) for my 7 digit plate on "The Heap" (see left). Somehow the manufacturere made the digits and the plate the same size as the original 6 digit one on my 1964 LI, although the gap between the edge of the plate and the digits is less than it should be according to DVLA.

Legal? I don't know. But I'm sure Plod has better things to do with his time (please tell me he has.................) Also, I think plates have to conform to the "rules" for an MOT.

I'm gonna have a go at painting my own using a stencil. I want the original sixties style painted font (bottom) as opposed to the new one. Any ideas on what metal i should use?

At the end of the day its down to how "friendly" your MOTer is. After all, anyone that gets a scooter MOT'd before registration doesn't have a plate anyway!!
