check all the springs are seated correctly, if any of them are not it will cause uneven compression, this will also result in drag.

is it the original piston or correct piston for the barrel, some alternatives have ring pegs in different places that can allow the rings to open, this will allow them to open into the ports

i put a 5 speed in mine, took a tooth of the cluster, if you carry on with the 5 speed expect to break it unless its the supreme version, when it was in i also run the short 5th, it was great, if you want reliability in the gearbox my advice (there are others) would be Indian GP 200 with 18 or 19 fr...

Handle bars, top and headlight rim, difficult to get three to match up nicely, right on the top of the bike, difficult to hide if they are not nice. I've just rebuilt the top end of my 250 as the starting was becoming more difficult, not to the level you describe the bottom ring was stuck in, back to normal now. There is obviously something wrong you need to get it apart and have a look, it'll be cheaper than if something is wrong and it breaks,...
