Hi all!

On my 1956 42l2 conversion with a t5, I'm having difficulty working out what bracket I need as the bike is m12 and the bracket recommended to me by sip is m10.

I bought the black mount as sip recommended it but now sip are saying I need the silver one pictured below instead due to size matching. What concerns me is that the black one is offset whereas the silver is pretty central. Just wondering if anyone has done a similar conversion & what bracket you used please?

Cheers Andrew

I used the black one but it had to rewelded as it offset the back wheel by a centimeter or so. Not that I can be sure that the bracket was wrong. With a 60 year old frame that had been repaired more than once, who knows if the frame was dead true?

The bolt size is really not a problem for the engine bracket, its only needed as the wireframe Vespas had a swing arm, which the bracket is replacing this, to make the T5 fit. You will also notice there are three slots on the bracket, these are for bolts to pass through the bracket and the underside of the frame (fuel tap section). I will post pictures later on, currently doing a similar build at the moment. You also have to grind away a piece on the casings, so as the barrel does not foul the frame, again i will post pictures of this.

You will notice the left side has the thread of the bolt showing & the right side is tight up against the frame. This allows you to play with the position of the bracket, moving it left or right.

You will need to grind away at the shock tube mount, engine bolt mount and the engine casing marked in red. This again allows you some movement left and right. The section marked red has to removed, a lot actually, this allows you to fit the barrel without cutting the chassis. You will notice a red cross on the first picture, thats the area where the engine casing hits the frame. If you don't do this the angle the engine sits causes the barrel to hit the chassis.

When you have the engine sitting the way you want it, drill the two M8 holes for the fixing bolts, this secures the bracket in place making sure it does not move either up, down or left, right and also giving the engine more support.

Shock distance bolt is 25 or 35mm long (can't remember) bolts into the rear shock/seat bracket will need to be tapped to take the distance nut. Shock needs to be standard PX length 330mm and straight spring, not the bellow spring otherwise it hits the rear tyre.

You can then set the alignment by tightening the relevant nuts, bolts so that the rear wheel aligns with the front. This takes time and will never be exactly spot on but you can get it very close. There is a lot of trial and error when setting this up.

Everything above is on a GS150 chassis and so your chassis which is very similar should work without any problem. The T5 engine has the centre plug and on the GS the resistor cap fouls the side panel, I am not sure what happens with your panel, you might be ok. If it does foul the panel remove the rubber cap and cover in electrical tape.

There is no need to cut any part of your frame, so if you have problems let me know.

Hi all,

I managed to fit the engine using the black SIP bracket but wasn't happy with its alignment with the shock absorber or wheel.

I've since spoken to SIP and they've now advised that I use the silver bracket instead!

As the silver bracket offset is almost central compared to the black one, I wondered if anyone has ever used one of these brackets with success?

As ever your advice is much appreciated!

Andrew

Andrew

You have to remember that you are trying to fit a modern engine into a 50+ year old frame. How do you know the frame is straight. When you put this together, everything must be hand tight so you can move each piece to align together. Its not a natural conversion and is very difficult to get the wheels to align perfectly. The shock is rubber mounted and a little movement is to be expected from left to right. You want the dry build to be more or less complete and follow the pictures I have posted.
I have done a few of these and everyone is different and I have used the same model of frame every time, with different results.

Hi all !

Just received the silver bkt from sip and its no good as the engine now doesn't fit at all, just wandering if anybody knows of someone who would be able to mount the engine as sip will not be able to help any further as I've already swapped the bkt once.

I really don't understand what the problem was with the black bracket from SIP. Why don't you post pictures of the frame and bracket as Ive done so we can see the problem. Its not easy to help when you just say things don't fit. Where are you.
