Original AF electronic questions
I`ve just got an original AF/Ducati electronic system, there`s a few fins broken off of the flywheel, would it be best to machine off the remainder of fins and fix a plastic fan on or leave it, also how can I test the stator I have a multimeter but not 100% sure how to use it, advice please

To test set your meter to Ohms, the 1 Kh scale will do.
Zero the meter by touching the probes together, this Reading should be zero.
Now check with probes connected Between red and White approx 125 ohms resistance.
Then between green and White approx 520 ohms.
And between green and red approx 640 ohms.
Then check between yellow and the earth to stator lighting circuit approx 0.3 ohms resistance.
It's hard to check the pick up to see if it's still working even with the correct read Inge as the diodes inside can be burnt out but the Reading is still correct. But with the stator connected to the engine and spinning the flywheel the correct voltage produced from the pick up is 1.2 volts if it's in good condition.
Sorry I can't give more accurate figures as I'm at work (45 min break) driving and have no notes so this is from memory but I think it's close to right.
Jims, that 1.2 voltage, is that kickstarting speed?

I would like to Tig new fins on if that is possible, the welding wouldn`t affect the magnets would they? I`ve got an old flywheel to cut the fins off.

Its possible that it could de-magnetise the stator when tig welding, but these are similar to the Italian flywheels in construction, so it should be possible to remagnetize them, but check with AF's (Ray Kemp) first before welding them.TS1-200 wrote:I would like to Tig new fins on if that is possible, the welding wouldn`t affect the magnets would they? Dont forget that the Modified lightened Indian flywheels MB sells are welded at the boss with no or little effect on the magnets.

Scootering issue 246 had an article on this, and displays the oscilloscope graphs for the LT feed coil & pick up which shows the 1 positive pulse that occurs only when the coils within it are covered by opposing magnetic poles.

I am begingign to visualise it in my head a little better know.
I actualy was going to get a recently deceased friend of mine(Giggy-RIP) who worked for Emgo?, the motor bike parts company, to build a stator that you could map out, just like the bike ones. He was their R+D man. Unfortunatley, he needed a lot of information that I couldn't find, like kick start voltage needed, high rpm limiter, lights wattage, all the electric end of it.
This was way before any one was doing advance/retard units. Wish it would have come to fruition, we'd would all of been buying brand new, custom designed stators for years now and I'd have a little money in ma pocket instead of lint
