Disc Brake Speedometer Drive Set (Nylon)

i have a problem with speedo dive set keeps chewing up each other in a original front disc set up, have changed 4 times have tried nylon Pinion and nylon inner drive cog , and even metal speedo pinion with new nylon drive cog , with same affects to inner drive cog , any suggestions running out of ideas and money .

My first thought is that the pinion is 'floating' in and out too far, eventually jamming at one end. Possibly caused by wear in the hub or if you're lucky at the end of the retaining 'nut' the cable fixes to.
