timing appears to be out- so much so that the engine is running backwards (true)
Suggest check woodruff key is OK then retime

Doesn't matter where you set your mark, as long as you set one mark at TDC and one at whatever degree of advance you want. Best done with the head off and a dial guage indicator. Or, if you very, very careful, put a small screwdriver down the plug hole, rocking the motor backwards and fowards past TDC. Do this a few times and you will get a feel for what is TDC. Then, use a degree timing disc to set you advance. This touch method is only really a last resort, using the dial guage will get you spot on.
