using the egt guage

took my ts1 for a short spin today with the guage fitted to test the new egt guage was wired correctly,gave it a bit of welly to get the needle moving,anyway it sat around 500 degrees at 75mph,albeit i didnt hold this speed for too long,so is this saying i can down jet as i hear its expected to run more towards 600 degrees,plug colour was a nice "chocolate" brown.any advice on actually understanding heat values would be appreciated

I haven't got one, but it's on my todo list.
Is the actual reading that critical ? Given that we're talking about being fitted by a variety of methods to a variety of engines in a variety of frames.
I was anticipating that it's more about learning where your setup sits best, seeing what factors affect this, and then being able to react to or avoid them as necessary.
of course I could be talking bollox

I'd say if it's pulling smoothly through the gears without bogging then you've found your benchmark and use it as Byron says. Your plug colour is good which is more important and the Agusto must help with a more consistant temperature I would have thought

Sounds about right, my RB runs around 495 to 500 flat out for over a mile then plug chopped it, and got a slightly dark choco brown colour plug, and I know mine is a little rich which was I ask Al to do when I had it dynoed at Diablo. Runs around 500 at 70 mph and same plug colour as yours.

Aero engines generally run 475 - 495 degrees C so yours sounds about right to me.
