fitting cylinder

I am rebuilding an indian gp motor. Got an italian Li 150 barrel off a mate who has upgraded. Just tried an initial fit, and noticed that when the barrel is slid down the cylinder studs it fouls on a slight ridge half way down the spigot and thus remains 5mm or so proud. should i try to apply heat to the casing, or wet and dry the inside of the case? An Li barrel should fit ? Thanks

Hi ed, could you post a picture?... I would like to help, unfortunately I have trouble understanding where is it touching. It should be a straight fit.

I am also having trouble understanding your query.
Did the barrel fit OK before the cylinder studs were fitted?

I assume the lip you are talking about is the one round the outside of the spigot of the barrel,this problem can be caused by the cylinder stud thread posistion's not being 100% in place in the crankcase and as you slide the barrel down the studs it is slightly pushing the barrel out of position.You could try a couple of things to sort this out. Firstly check if you look at the position of the studs in the cylinder holes as it gets to the casing mouth is one of them up against one side of the cylinder pushing it out of place ? If it is remove the offending stud to see if the barrel now bottoms out correctly,if this cures the problem you could enlarge the cylinder stud hole in the barrel to assist the offset position of that stud in the crankcase.TAKE CARE NOT TO GO TO BIG AS THE BASE GASKET NEEDS TO SEAL ON THE SAME SURFACE. If during the the first bit above there is no obvious stud out of place remove them all and check the cylinder fit, if ok then refit each stud one at a time checking the cylinder fit as you go. I would assume the cylinder will fit with the studs out but if by chance it dosent you would need a friend with a lathe to remove some metal from the offending lip area .

I'd run a round file through it, but have a good look with a torch first in case its just crud. A little at a time until the cylinder slides on nicely. Give it a good blow (Oheerrr) to get rid of any filings.
