Sloppy Gear Cables - Seized Horncast - Hair torn out

I think I know the answer to the first problem.

First Problem:

Just swapped my 186 engine back into the LI and replaced both gear cables. They have become very sloppy. Tightened them up and again they became sloppy.

I take it one or both have came out of their little holding place in the headset clamp?

Second problem:

I'm having great difficulty getting the horncasting off. One or both of the screws under the mudguard are seized. So I can't access the gear outers to put them back in their slots.

Anyone got any ideas on how to remove the horncasting screws under the mudguard or get the the outer gear cables to sit back in place on the headset clamp?

Thanks.

If it's just the mudguard to horncasting screws, then it'll be easier to remove them both as one.

you might be able to get at them by taking the head set top off. thats how i do it if they come out of the head set base.

I'm with SH on this one. I only remove the horncasting for this sort of problem when I fail to get them back in place by removing the headset.

Incidently, if you "squeeze together" the two halves of the outer cable retainers in the cast iron handlebar clamp, it will "grip" the cable and the problem should not re-occur. This is a good job to do when the handlebars are off the scooter.
