Now down to my last litre of Motul 800 (off road ester 2T), have used it in my 225cc classic rapido for the last two years with no problems and at 40-1,
but now having a new engine built and wanted to know if you knew of any better oil or one that was easier to get, i have to get it mail order and £17 a litre
On the bottle it says can be used at 66-1 and in the past on my enduro bikes i have, but everyone i have spoken to says not on a lambretta why
WHAT OIL ???????

As a follow on to this topic what is there to gain at running at 40:1 on a road going scooter rather than normally recommended 25:1 or at a push a possible 33:1. From all the things I have read regarding this matter such a G.Bells Performance Tuning and also an article posted on here, nothing, only less power produced and a greater likelihood of main bearing failure.
With regards to oil, I've used Putoline TT+ at 25:1 for years with no issues at all.

Cant say its better to be fair but ive been using Putoline MX5 for a few years at 3% [4% when running in] on a iron stage 4, a Muggy and my RB230, no sieze,s and no excessive wear, and its very widely available
, its about £10 a ltr.

I would always go with the advice of whoever built your engine, that way it satisfies the criteria they recomended.6LDA 28B wrote:Now down to my last litre of Motul 800 (off road ester 2T), have used it in my 225cc classic rapido for the last two years with no problems and at 40-1,

It's a trade off, cleaner burning, better spark, more power, etc rather like setting your carb up on the rich side, it's safer but performance is compromised, your engine builder will most likely err on the cautious side too as that's in his best interest. At £18 a litre do you want half of it going out of the back door?chris2470 wrote:As a follow on to this topic what is there to gain at running at 40:1 on a road going scooter rather than normally recommended 25:1 or at a push a possible 33:1.
That’s the thing, 33:1 I can understand, but from what I have read dropping the ration to as low as 40:1, nearly half the recommended oil content doesn’t necessarily give any of the above customary recognized improvements.

I think some of you might have overlooked the fact that the oil mix ratio was set a 25/1 many moons ago when the oils available were a lot more crude and basic. Todays oils will easily do the job at a lesser ratio say 40/1 . I raced a group four Lambretta ( 200cc iron barrel) mixing Putoline MX5 at a 40/1 ratio keeping the jetting as near to the mark as I could get it to get better power.I revved the s**t out of it but it never had an oil related failure. In fact if I was a gambler I reckon it could have mixed at 50/1 because when I would strip the motor it was swimming in the stuff.
I would recommend any Putoline Product
Oh and I used it in the Kursaal Flyer

Tuning on the tarmac dyno of life............
I have run @ 50/1 for about 20yrs with no problems what so ever. Like Vince says, as long as you run a good oil, you shouldnt have no problems.

If you like motul oil try the 710 which is high spec but can used with auto lube systems so mixes better.
Or Hein Gericke own fully synth is made by Motul and very close to 710 spec and just £31.99 for 5 litres.

Would modern fully synthetics give different results?
