when fitting a new piston, does it need the shims that go either side of the small end?
The old piston had them.

I would have thought so, if they were fitted originally, it depends on the crank, is there shims either side of the crank bearing?, if so no piston shims required, if there are no shims either side of the crank bearing and the rod can move sideways a couple of mm on the crank pin, piston shims are required,

The crank is a MEC and has shimms on the bottom end.

With this crank you don't have to fit shims at the piston.
