Gearbox shim/tolerances

Assembling a gearbox on the series 1 for the first time. I'm following both sausages DVD and Sticky's book. The book says to leave the gear selector in 2nd gear while assembling. Sausage seems to leave his in first.

Problem is, when i leave it in first, there's no movement in first or on the shim. Leave it in second, and there's decent play and tolerance. which is right, and how can I I work out the size of the new shim if i need it?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I have nothing in the trans. when I shim a trans. just the axle and the gears and shims. Makes it a ton easier and quicker...
Don't need the christmas tree or dowels either, they just take up time in the removing /replacing process. I like to shim as close to .004 as possible.
