Small End shims In or Out?

Hi All,

Just wondering whats the general thought when it comes gudgeon pin piston shims at the small end.

My crank is the Li/SX Mazzucchelli type with MMC stamped on the conrod & has no big end shims fitted but has them at the small end.

I've heard it's best to leave the small end shims out as they can be prone to breaking up but surely this still leaves the conrod to float left to right even with a larger Jap type small end bearing fitted.

I have just put my top end together but have left the shims out on the advice that they could break up but to be honest I'm just not sure :?

So, In or out :?:

Cheers
mike

If you have no big end shims, I'd look to place small end shims, personally. This, however, depends on the piston/ small end conrod tolerance.

I've just rebuilt my Lynx 200. No big end shims but I could get get both the Spanish small end shims in with about 1mm clearance.
