LTH 7-plate no packer clutch

hey guys just wanted to share how easy an install this 7-plate clutch was.

Do the plates have to be loaded into the basket like a standard clutch or can it be pre-assembled and loaded like a cartridge?

How does it feel? Can you adjust the preload?

it's loaded like a standard clutch. i don't quite understand what you mean by pre-load. there's springs in there just like in a standard one. if you want stronger springs you can get them everywhere. i would think you can use the really easy original springs up to 20-25 bhp.

the overall feel is great. it only starts grabbing in the last 1/8th of the clutch lever action, but then firmly takes a hold. like in a car or motorcycle.

ARNE the term preloaded means all the plates and springs can be removed in one go lika a vespa one this thread has some pictures so might help http://scooterotica.org/tempforum/viewt ... tch#p41662

What I mean by preload is the spring pressure. If a clutch can handle say 30bhp then if you can increase preload then you could potentially handle more bhp, albeit with a stiffer lever action. As these clutches can handle around 40bhp anyway it would be nice to be able to reduce preload to suit a 25bhp bike and have a lighter lever action.

oh just use the standard springs as mentioned above (plus teflon lined cables) and you have lever action like on the cosa clutch for vespas. and that on a 25bhp bike.

Arne, do the plates need soaking in gearbox oil for 24 hours prior to installing them?
Can you use different gearbox oil with them instead of the usual very thick ST90 oil?

i just left the SAE90 oil i'd had in the gearbox right there. didn't soak the plates either. everything works fine! carefree install - very california style!

oh yes and i just thought that yes you should be able to pre assemble as you can still tighten down the spider when removing the vespa style pressure plate. haven't tried though! but why would you do it, you'd need a vespa tool to compress the clutch and can't use the holding tool to tighten the christmas tree nut.

Apparently SAE90 gearbox oil has around the same viscosity as SAE30 engine oil. I didn't believe this and was firmly put in my place on here by a variety of experts who proved the point by posting viscosity charts.

You say the ST90 is very thick and I agree with you, comparing the two oils demonstrates that the 30 weight oil as used in Vespas seems much thinner than the 90 weight stuff.
