welding?

Wanted some advice on which way to go with some welding I want doing on my side panels. Want to put a air scoop in my side panel. After talking to the welder he can either:

Fabricate one from scratch then french it in

Buy a pre made one, feetle it then french it in

or, buy a fibreglass one and sandwhich it in with fibreglass sheets then use filler to shape.

Not sure about the last one as iv never used this stuff and that part would be down to me.. or what the qulaity of the bespoke one will be. Have seen one done where a scooby bonnet scoop which had the middle taken out to shortern it and did look good if a tad extreme.

Anyone done anything like this before or can let me know pros/cons of using fibreglass and metal together?

why not have a trip to you local scrapyard, and see if there are any bonnet louvres , or air ducts, or heater vents or suchlike on old bonnets or the like. just take a cordless grinder with you and cut what you want, then get your welder to "let in" the vent or whatever to your panel? i saw a topper vent on a lads GP, and he said it was off the back of an old stereo! and some others that were made from vw vents. the world is your lobster mate!

Just had some made Sef..like mini bonnet scoops, had them fabricated up from scratch from my fab lads at work..they turned out not to bad, I gave them a set of plastic lovres for the basic pattern and curve and hole centres and they fasten in the same as standard lovres, they made them up in stainless and like I say they turned out ok..BUT they where very labour intensive as they made them from 4 sections cut on the guillotine then shaped on the bender then welded together then ground and polished.. I would say at least 6 hours labour plus materials..So would be very expensive if you out sourced it..

I drilled a 25mm hole with an holesaw in the cans behind the scoop so the cold air pulled into the scoop would be thrust inside the cans..

Steady Rog..theres rags between all the panels therefore no metal touching metal..its an optical illusion.. ..anyway its powder coated and ready to go to the painters..

I knew there'd be some sort of cop-out answer like that. Are those rags transparent then..........

Ric, yeah i thought as much. shame really as there are loads of them out vthere for reasonable prices. doesnt seem to be the same for metal ones unfortuantley.Think it might not be a bad shout re the scrap yard...
