Fitting a legshield toolbox.

Had a question about fitting them on my website, so as it took me about an hour to write it I thought I'd post it here too...........

I recently fitted one of the PX style ones to my GP. It usually takes a fair bit of modification to get them to fit correctly. I started by masking off all of the inside of the legshields, then positioned the toolbox where I thought it looked best, making sure you've got adequate clearance for the foot brake. Then I drew an outline of it onto the masking tape, so I'd know exactly where it was going. The masking tape also protects your paint as you have to keep trying the toolbox against the leggies. Then it's a slow process of trimming it to fit. I used a pair of tinsnips, trimming off no more that 1mm at a time. Where it touches the leggies you have to trim off and gradually the gaps get smaller and smaller. Took me a couple of hours getting it to the right shape. Then you mark the 2 bottom holes in line with the brackets in the toolbox. Next drill the holes and bolt the toolbox on. Next bit is a bit tricky as there's 2 more brackets at the top but they have to be mounted via 2 extra little brackets that have to be pop riveted onto the leggies close to the centre so that the rivets are out of sight under the horncasting. There's 3 rivets per bracket so 6 holes need drilling, so you need to be very careful marking the exact spots and you then remove the toolbox to be able to drill them. Then pop rivet the brackets on and you should be able to bolt the toolbox to the brackets. There are elongated holes in all the brackets so there is some scope for slight adjustment. Then I smoothed off all the edges with a round needle file, fitted the rubber and then bolted it on. Hardest part is correctly marking the top hole for the bracket that has to be riveted. I didn't get it quite right and had to open up the holes in the brackets. It's difficult to mark them as you need the toolbox in place to do it, an extra pair of hands might of made it an easier job. It's also difficult to drill the holes on the rounded part of the leggies without the drill wandering as you've got a very restricted area to work in. Took me about 4 hours all in and it looked pretty good when I'd finished. I had expected it to be smaller than the Rally style but I managed to fit one of the round margarine tubs in flat containing some spare soaked clutch plates, 4 litres of oil, a litre of gearbox oil, a couple of big locks with big carbon type chains and various other tools, I was amazed at how much crap I could fit in it, almost as much as women can fit into a handbag.
