Lower chain gaurd

What's the general view on lower chain gaurds? I've heard that some people leave them off due to the possibility of them breaking and jaming the sprockets
I've got to change my chain soon, I have a green nylon top tensioner, just wondering if I should remove the bottom one, any thoughts?

Don't use one with 'slippier than a slippy thing' top tensioner on my GP. No problems in two years?

Definitely remove it - mine snapped at low speeds - just after a thrashing on the dual carriageway and went round the front sprocket - instantly locking the engine up solid
