Hi,

I recently replaced the speedo drive on my Sterling outboard disc brake. Since then I feel the bike is not handling well. It feels like it is pulling to the right. When I brake the handle bars shake terribly. I loosened off the nut between the hub and the disc link (not the dome locking nut obviously ) in the pic below and it was a lot better.



I still feel it is not perfect, which it was before I changed the speedo drive. I also recently put on a set of Scootrs chrome front dampers. Also pictured. I had a set of sebec dampers previously. Is it possible the dampers are the problem, although I have a feeling it's more than that. Any ideas????

I don't know the answer to your question. But the mention of ScootRS dampers does ring a bell. I know a lot of people who have fitted uprated fork springs experience problems if they have these dampers fitted. The problem would seem to lie in the action of the dampers themselves. Most only work one way. In other words they only damp in one direction. Whereas ScootRS ones damp both ways and this makes them very stiff. Combined with hard springs it would seem to have an adverse effect on the handling. It's just a thought, but perhaps it may be related to the problems you are having.

Following on from Doom Patrol's observations, why don't you just take the dampers off and try it? You can soon pop them back on again if it makes no difference.

Tried that, but still the same.

Any more news on this?

I'm afraid it's still the same. Gonna take off the hub/disc brake and have a closer look next.

Update:

Took the disc brake apart and reassembled it, step by step, carefully. Then put on a set of escort front dampers, replacing a set of Scootrs S/S ones. Took it out for a spin, and hey presto, all is good.

Wondered that..what was your final outcome then..dampers or something not seated correct..?, done it myself, rechecked everything and found something not niped up right..front hubs can be a pain if ye rush it..glad to hear your sorted Mr Ed..

Same thing, hadn't got it all put back together properly, and tightened up right. I think the dampers helped too though.
