Schoolboy error! (unfortunately I'm old enough to know better!) Eventhough I checked the speedo nut had the "O" ring retainer underneath it's fallen down the cable into the fork tube.

What's the best way of retreiving it apart from turning the bloody scooter upside down or taking the forks out?

ask 5 other freaks to turn the scooter...


...or take some fat grease and put loads of around the top of your cable-outer.
then pull carefully on the lower end of the cable,-from the forks-u-bent, that the heavy greased end is on the bottom of the steering column where the ring is. then push up carefully and grab it.
from now on use a little cable clip...

I couldn't have said it better. THIS WORKS! Also when you get it out, what you should do is put a zip tie under it so it will not happen again.

I've used masking tape wrapped the wrong way round the speedo nut with good effect in the past.

Seriously though, first I'll get a handfull of grease/masking tape then cable tie it

easy peasy pull the housing out of the fork with the inner removed
put the housing back in the fork _the wrong way
pushing it in through the lower hole under the mud guard
and as the housing emerges through the top of the fork
the nut is caught on the end
and is being pushed out by the housing

and the easy way to get the housing in is
too put the inner in the wrong way too
and as it protrudes from the top of the fork
slide the housing on too the inner
and use it as a guide to get it throught the lower hole
you will usually grab the inner and rotate the the inner in a clock wise motion
and i am not talking about spinning the inner either
rotating it like a bicycle crank pedal like motion
too get the housing to bend slightly to get it through the tight bend/turn
as it exits the fork
you will need to feed/push the housing down
so as you use the inner as a guide
also the end of the inner is semi rigid
the part inserted to the speedo drive
so make sure that part of inner is not making the tight turn
once you have masterd the tecnic
it usually takes 1-2min to get that nut out and replace the housing and inner
also put a little ziptie at the top of the housing
so that nut cant fall into the fork again
rubber o-rings tend to rot, split and fall down over time

The variation I used was double sided carpet tape instead of masking tape

Underneath the bike I saw the rubber ring which had perished and split. Firmly ziptied in place now

Blob of Blu Tack stuck on the end of a straightened out wire coat hanger does it for me, then tye rap underneath it.

A long thin rod,with 3 to 4 chewed bubble gums at one end,
has done the trick for me.
