just looked at my mates lml reed vale motor today because of a leak.
when i started it up there was what looked like (and smelt) like gear oil coming from the reed base ?.
i smelt the gear oil from the filling point on the engine and detected what i think smelt of petrol.
any idea what it could be.

Usually means clutch side seal is gone when fuel and gear oil mix, often with white smoke present when starting up.
The crankcase is then pressurising the gearbox - if you block the clutch breather while it's running and the idle changes, that will confirm.
