Symbols On Casings

Was talking last night about letters & numbers printed on engine cases & how is was perhaps to identify a particular worker who performed the job etc. Anyone else heard anything?
See below on a late 1961 S2 cases; a '3' on the chaincase, a 'Y' on the suspension pivot, and perhaps the remains of a 'D' on the engine mount.
