Lambretta Rear Brake Adjuster
In a word tension, it wouldn't be that effective without it.

Bit more of an explanation please.In a word tension, it wouldn't be that effective without it
Does it help the brake shoes to release after braking? About every 5-600 miles or so, the rear brake starts to bind. I remove the hub, clean out all the dust, put a bit of grease on the cam, and all is fine; for the next 5-600 miles.
Would the spring prevent that?

The spring on the adjuster serves no other purpose than to put tension against the cam of the brass knurled adjusting nut to keep it in place and stop it unscrewing and falling off.

ALL it does is stop the knurled knob un-adjusting by keeping the barrell part (that sits in the arm) pushing under pressure against the curved recess in the adjuster (knurled knob). In theory (and someone must have practical experience of it), without it, as you release the brake the adjuster could un-wind, de-adjusting the brakes. The designers must have deemed/ experienced that the brake shoe spring wasn't providing sufficient pressure. If you don't have one, and enough thread, remove the knurled knob and use two 6mm nuts (one nyloc) and adjust then lock the two nuts against each other. Save knurled adjuster for when you get a spring.

Lambretta rear drum brakes are not the greatest at the best of times. I would say use everything correctly with all components giving you half a chance of an effective brake including the spring.
I may add also the length of the rear outer brake cable is critical, if this is just too short more often this will give issues.
