Been looking at rear shock absorber's with a view to replacing mine (1962 Li150 with 186 Mugello). I have read that it is possible and quite common to fit a longer shock than the standard 300mm. Is it advisable to fit a longer one and if so what are the benefits? I don't know why but there seems to be much better availability of the 310mm length than the 300mm. I am not overly fussed about make but I am not planning on spending more than £100. I tend to ride solo with very occasional two up. I don't do that many miles per year either. Any advise or recommendations??

A longer shock will move the cylinder / manifold closer to the frame. If you have no clearance issues in that area then you should be fine.
I don't see any great benefits of a longer shock, other than the availability you've referred to, most people go shorter because of clearance problems.

Thanks for the info rosscla. I have come across the Carbone brand that look pretty decent and are reasonably priced. They are available in standard and sport (double spring in the sport and stated as being harder than standard). Any views or feedback on them? Can't find any reviews anywhere. SIP are selling them for £52 plus P&P
I've got one on my Special, looks good and does the job, can't really complain at the price
