Kickstart dis-engaging.

My kickstart keeps disengaging, been in and adjusted it endlessly no change. A club member borrowed it recently and put his side case on & it started to do the same to his. Is this something to do with compression? Or something more simple like the spring in the piston weakening?

Do you mean slipping across the teeth?
If that's what you mean then I'd guess the plunger/piston is worn out and can't grab the teeth on 1st gear. These usually wear out when some one rests their foot on the kick lever while riding. Makes a cool grinding noise.

if the piston teeth are ok then change the spring is the kickstart return plate set right and tight or worn

The teeth look decent & 1st gear doesn't have any wear on its teeth. My feet are well clear of the kickstart when riding so unlikely. Will likely replace complete piston side of things. Just strange when it happened on my mates sidecase when it doesn't happen on his scoot.
